Chat de Mer

Pattern_Image

Creator/Artist Name:

  Loraine Perkins

Country:

 USA

Date Completed:

 07/26/07

CONTEST Item #:

 26

This is a Labyrinth wall hanging. It is made of over 20,000 beads. The stitches used are right angle weave, peyote and brick stitch. In the fringe are handmade beads done by several friends of mine. Some are lamp work, raku, wood carved, paper-mache and ceramic. I design the Labyrinth myself and a friend of mine told me she thought it looked like a cat. Another friend said she thought it looked like a fish. So I added fringe to make it look like the ocean, hence the name "Chat de Mer"

Velvet in the Snow

Pattern_Image

Creator/Artist Name:

  Cynthia Penaskovic

Country:

 USA

Date Completed:

 July 20, 2007

CONTEST Item #:

 20

Pictures rarely do justice to the live image. The silverlined cobalt beads that I used to make this French beaded floral centerpiece seem to have an inner glow that look like a deep rich velvet.

I only used 2 colors of beads to make this piece. Silver silverlined beads were the 2nd color which resemble ice. Hence the name "Velvet in the Snow".

I combed through every floral beading book on the market along with Burpee seed catalogs for inspiration! Then I put my own twist on it and came up with this whimsical creation.

This has turned into a never ending project. Thank goodness there was a deadline to this contest, or I would keep adding to it. Never enough beads in a piece for me!

Since tapestry crochet is done with several threads, each one was strung with just one bead color. Only the color that was needed at the time was crocheted to form the motif while the other bead-strung thread was carried. The colored threads contributed to the pattern and helped form a substantial fabric.

The flowers used include, Lilacs, Roses, Poppies, Freesia, Lilies, Baby's Breath, Spider Mums, Carnations. Pussy Willow, Delphinium, Dahlia, Canterbury Bells and Chrysanthemums.
